As the world of legalized marijuana expands, the manner in which you entertain Mary Jane has become more sophisticated.  There are countless products on the market to smoke, eat, suck & inhale marijuana.  But did you know that you can also create craft cocktails with cannabis?  Oh it’s true.

Turns out that nobody knows more about crafting the perfect cannabis cocktail than our good friend Warren Bobrow, author of the finest craft cocktail books, including the “Cannabis Cocktails, Mocktails and Tonics”. Bobrow has spent years experimenting with various drinks, tinctures and modifiers that give a little more buzz than your average alcoholic concoction.

We tapped Bobrow for a recipe and his secrets to creating that precision-perfect whiskey cocktail with an herbal kick.

TRM: How do you take cannabis and properly infuse it to use in a cocktail?

WB: To fully convert the psychoactive Delta9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THCA) that unlocks the stuff that helps us feel good, (THC), heat must be used at a specific temperature for a specific period of time without any fluctuation in degree. This process is called Decarboxylation or “decarb.” At the end of this process, fully active (THC) cannabis is ready for your use in any number of ways, from cooking to cosmetics to cocktails and mocktails.

TRM:  Very Cool, what is a mocktail?

WB:  A non-alcoholic drink.

TRM:  Ahh, that’s funny.  What do you use to decarb the weed?

BW:  I use the NOVA™ Decarboxylation device that makes the traditionally arduous process of decarbing easy. Open up the top of the handsomely designed device that looks more like a European-designed coffee grinder than a precision heating device. Your cannabis goes inside the metal container, covered by an airtight silicone lid. Place the hard-plastic top on top, give it a twist and press start. That’s it! No more dialing uncalibrated temperatures and hoping that the thermostat on your toaster or regular oven is correct. (which it is not – your oven can fluctuate as much as 40 degrees!) The Nova makes your decarbing tasks easy and perfect every time. Also, I found that the profound intimations of char and smoke in bourbon from the aging barrels compliment the profoundly fragrant and richly aromatic terpenes (the natural aroma found in cannabis) are revealed by using the Nova.
