6.  The Finest Hours (2016)

top films about the ocean - finest hours

Like the submarine Red October, this film slipped many viewers’ radar, which happens to many of Casey Affleck’s movies for some reason.  Another true story of one of the most daring sea rescues in history.  An easy choice to our list of best movies about the ocean.

In 1952, off the coast of Cape Cod, a massive storm splits the SS Pendleton in two, trapping more than 30 sailors inside the tanker’s sinking stern. Engineer Ray Sybert (Affleck) bravely takes charge to organize a strategy for his fellow survivors. As word of the disaster reaches the Coast Guard in Chatham, Mass., Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) orders a daring rescue mission. Despite the ferocious weather, coxswain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) takes three men on a lifeboat to try and save the crew against seemingly impossible odds.

5. Big Wednesday (1978)

best ocean movies big wednesday

This is an amazing film about beachlife and surfing in the 60s and 70s is a must see for any surfer or any ocean loving person.  Big Wednesday, directed by John Millius is loosely based on his own experiences in Malibu. This ocean movie stars Jan-Michael Vincent, William Katt, and Gary Busey in perhaps his finest role as California surfers facing the Vietnam War against the backdrop of their love of surfing.

Raised in Southern California, Milius made Big Wednesday as an homage to the time he spent in Malibu during his youth. Milius and his friends George Lucas and Steven Spielberg famously agreed to exchange a percentage point of Big Wednesday, Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind prior to the release of the three films throughout 1977-1978. Spielberg in particular was certain that Big Wednesday was going to be a box office hit, saying it was like “American Graffiti meets Jaws”, two of the decade’s most successful films.
