9. Having a Pleasant Demeanor Is Not Optional
There is no tolerance for resting bitch face in corporate America, unless you are related to the owner. It’s true! Your attitude and how you interact with others is everything. You must have patience for those lesser-skilled than you. You must tolerate overly chatty coworkers that waste your time. You must figure out how to be pleasant with lazy co-workers that always push work on you.
The quality of your work will take a backseat to your attitude. If you ever appear unfriendly, rude or disinterested in others, you’ll find it difficult to advance. Being polite and cheerful isn’t optional if you want to succeed in most organizations.
I used to write into my team’s job descriptions – Must contribute to a positive work environment. This covered my butt in case I hired someone who later became an asshole and ruined the whole vibe in our department. It was legal grounds for termination since I included that one line in their job description. Take note.
