Hidden Gems: Uncovering the Best Beach Bars in America
1. Shellback Tavern , Manhattan Beach, CA
The Shellback Tavern is dying breed. The lone beach bar in a town that is just too close to Los Angeles to maintain its beach vibe. Nonetheless “Shellbacks” is a popular spot with the die-hard locals that refer to themselves as “Beach Trash”. Located a half block from the sand you can expect a friendly and salty crowd most days mixed with some locals like Mark Cuban and Steve Nash.
Summertime can get a little douchebaggery with USC alumni, but what beach bar doesn’t get douchey in the summer. Shellbacks has some of the best service in the South Bay, serving pitchers of beer, pizza, tacos and a $13 steak night. The jukebox cranks out great music most of the time, until a gaggle of drunk women come in .. but the bartender has a skip button. Shellback’s on the other hand should not be skipped when you visit the South Bay in Los Angeles.
