Your First Job: Ten Critical Things That Nobody Tells You
4. Arrivals and Departures
When you arrive to work and when you leave is important. When your boss and other senior executives pull into the parking lot they notice the cars that are there. You want to be seen as a hard worker so that means getting to work before your boss at least once a week. I used to try to show up 10 minutes before my boss. It’s just good optics when they see you at work before them.
The same is true for departure time. Every now and then make sure your boss sees you working late. Even if you are screwing around on the internet, wait until he/she leaves before you head to happy hour. It sounds dumb, but in the trivial corporate world these optics matter. It’s all a friggin’ game, like a high school popularity contest, and you need to be an active player.
