5. Dress Code

You need to adhere to and exceed the imposed dress code at your new job.  For instance many businesses have casual Fridays.   That doesn’t mean wear a t-shirt or a pair of baggy faded jeans.  It means you can wear a new pair of jeans, dark denim, with a collared shirt.   The dress code that matters is not the one in the human resources manual.  It’s the one you develop for yourself from monitoring how your superiors dress.  You just need to fall in line.  Go shopping after your first week when you get a good feel for the dress code.

Just like in your social life, you will be judged by the way you dress whether you like it or not. You might as well control the message because the stakes are higher in the business world.

Pro Tip:  If you are hungover, dress really nice, bring food and don’t look anyone in the eye until after lunch.
